12 – 4pm — Diversity in Children’s Literature: One Year Later (My panel is from 2:05-3:20)

Program Description: This session will continue and extend the conversation on how classroom teachers may incorporate diverse children’s literature into their teaching in meaningful and informative ways. Publishers, authors, librarians, and teachers will share their stories of how they publish, create, share, and teach diverse fiction and nonfiction.

Program Description: Classroom teachers tell their stories of challenged classroom materials with the very authors whose books were questioned. Told from these two perspectives—the teachers’ and the authors themselves – this session promises to provide participants with not only these stories, but the opportunity to share their own personal narratives and concerns.

8 – 9:15am — Learning the Art of Writing from the Writers: Authors’ Best Lessons to Help Students Find Their Voice Through Their Writing

Program Description: Hear a diverse group of authors share their best writing lessons for teachers to use with students. Attendees will rotate through six roundtables where they will participate in a writing activity led by each author which they can take back and incorporate into their own classroom teaching.

Program Description: Join highly-acclaimed YA authors for a panel discussion on access, equity, empowerment, and being “at-risk” in America. Participants will view clips from the documentary At-Risk Summer to shape the conversation. Panelists will share strategies and answer questions regarding identifying and effectively connecting with at-risk students in the classroom.
